In medieval England, there existed a revered monastic order called anchorites. These devout men and women committed to life-long solitude within a fixed place, often a 12x12 stone cell adjoining a church.

They led strict routines of prayer and worship within their “anchorhold,” offering counsel to parishioners and pilgrims through their single window to the outside world.
